Popping Pills: A Prescription Drug Abuse Epidemic

It has long been evident that the United States of America is a country overtaken by medication. Our pill popping tendencies and medical shortcuts have led to a number of problems - over-medicated children and an antibiotic crisis - but they’ve also created a generation eager to use these small, colorful, loosely controlled pills to get their next fix. In 2010, enough painkillers were prescribed to medicate the entire working population every four hours for an entire month. With 5% of the world’s population, the United States consumes three-quarters of its drug supply.

In 2010, there were 7 million prescription medication abusers - which is bad enough - but now, just in the past month there have been 6.2 million users. Their abuse falls into three categories: painkillers, tranquilizers, and stimulants; over half of these users get their fix for free, from a friend or relative who usually got them from their doctor. Prescription medications are so easy to get ahold of that teenagers even cite this as their #1 reason for using - they’ve got a whole smorgasbord of drugs in their parents’ medicine cabinets.

The War on Drug Communities Motion Graphic

Is our never-ending War on Drugs really helping people? We often only see one end of the drug crisis, the addicts, when there is an equally large system of people on the other end, supporting and sustaining it: the farmers who grow the drug crops.

These poor families in Colombia and Afghanistan have learned that they can make much more money farming drugs than anything legal - but it comes at the price of security and safety. Colombia is one of the most violent countries in the world, and still their political system is wracked with instability and violence. Afghanistan is the 7th poorest country in the world, and if farmers don’t make good on their promises, they sometimes have to sell their daughters as opium brides.

In order to truly end the drug crisis, we need to attack it at its two roots - the poor in developing countries who need economic alternatives, and the addicts in developed countries who need treatment and education. Educate yourself about these communities with this video.

The Entrepreneurial Mindset

Workers want freedom, and this desire is driving them towards independent (and often entrepreneurial) career paths. Following a prior study on disruption of work from the perspective of businesses, this survey examines the future of work as envisioned by professionals. Results found that many are planning their escape from corporate jobs — 72% of freelancers still at “regular” jobs want to quit entirely, and 61% say they are likely to quit within two years.

Millennials in particular are pursuing independent careers that foster faster progression than traditional hierarchical organizations. Of almost 2,000 Millennial respondents, 58% classified themselves as entrepreneurs. These responses (from more than 3,000 freelancers worldwide who have worked online) quantify the mindset of freelancers today, providing a glimpse into the professional landscape of tomorrow.

Amazing things only mothers do

There she is, your mom. The person who raised you and loved you and who can comfort you best and can annoy you the most. Dealing with your mom when you’re all grown up can be challenging. She took eighteen years out of her life to raise you. Whatever you are today, whatever you have achieved,…you owe to your mom because there are always amazing things she has done silently for you. Maybe you’re looking for a little time you could carve out to repay that huge kindness.

External image

Via PromoCode4Share

“At the moment, there are around 2 billion mothers in the world. On average, each mom has 2 babies. It is estimated that a middle-income mom may spend nearly $250,000 to raise a new child over the next 18 years. During the economic depression, mothers are willing to take a second job to make sure that their kids can go to the best schools.

As Honore de Balzac said: “A mother who is really a mother is never free’’, nowadays there is a little leisure time in a typical day of a working mom. On average, a mom needs to pay attention to her child every 4 minutes as well as do 88% of laundry. Aside from that, moms can do the strangest and greatest things for their little babies.

However, above all things, moms always do them all for free. Deep down inside, moms truly want a real day off rather than any kinds of jewelry. Also, there are many ways we can make our moms happy.”
