The Marketer’s Guide to the Demographics of Boston

Here’s an Infographic helping marketers understand more about what the demographics are  in Boston. This infographic will allow businesses to target consumers or prospects interested in their products or services in the Boston area.  From a marketing perspective, there are some good nuggets within this data. For example, although the average household income in Boston is listed at $71,878 annually, there are over 150,000 households earning in excess of $200k per year.  High-end retailers would certainly find that information to be valuable.

As neuroscience researchers work to unravel the inner workings of the brain, we know more than ever before about the mysteries of where emotions originate in the brain and the connections between instinct, intelligence and emotion. This work is yielding fascinating insights that we can use to understand how we react to situations and people. The brain, which is a much more flexible organ that previously thought, can be consciously retrained to be more emotionally flexible, understanding and sensitive. The Evolution of Enterprise Video

External image

© 2013 MediaPlatform

In the last decade, the use of video in the enterprise has experienced explosive growth. The internet has fueled this growth, allowing for video to be hosted, archived, and distributed live or on-demand at a fraction of the cost of traditional video methods. Training for example, used to be done in-person or with the aid of VHS or DVD recordings. However, the production costs were high, and the physical tape or DVD had to actually be delivered to the viewer’s location. By contrast, tools such as on-demand webcasting and online video portals now allow trainees to view video content from their own laptop, desktop, or even mobile devices.

Employees can now collaborate on projects from remote locations with much greater ease and efficiency through the use of video conferencing and webcasting tools.

With this all in mind, we thought it would be a fun exercise to develop an infographic highlighting the evolution of business video in the enterprise.

Disneyland: Maintaining Walt Disney World

Everyone knows the Disney Parks across the world are known as the magical kingdom, but no one ever takes the time to think about what it takes to maintain the magic. Hundreds of thousands of people can pour into a Disney Park over the course of a single month, and if left alone the parks could and probably would fall apart, but it is the maintenance
workers that keep it together. Just exactly how much maintenance is required to keep Walt Disney World looking perfect? For starters, Walt Disney World is about the size of San Francisco, so it requires a lot of workers to keep the magical kingdom looking spotless. Well just how many workers are there Well check out the infographic to find out.

This infographic talks about the workers of Disneyland and the hours of labor they spend making the happiest place on earth the cleanest and best run place on earth. It’s amazing what goes on behind the scenes at Disneyland and just how much work it takes to maintain it all. Replacing all of those lights and maintaining all those water parks isn’t done overnight. Or is it? Check out the infographic to learn about this amazing process and if you like Disneyland or want to know what it takes to keep it running, then you will love our infographic. Eco-fashion is becoming more mainstream. Etsy has more than 23,000 eco clothing listings and Pinterest has over 6,000 pages dedicated to “eco-fashion”. Green fashion shows are now featured during the New York, London, Paris and Milan Spring/Summer Fashion Weeks. Six celebrities wore eco-fashion to the 2012 Oscars, including Meryl Streep who wore a gold-lame gown by Lanvin. They were participating in the Green Carpet Challenge by Livia Firth, wife of Oscar winner Colin Firth. At the 2013 Golden Globes, Bradley Cooper wore a two piece suit by Tom Ford, designed exclusively for the Green Carpet Challenge. The British high street fashion label Jigsaw London has launched an eco-friendly Green Label line in America where they transform leftover fabrics into new fashion. This environmentally-friendly line adds no additional chemicals to the environment and allows customers to own a much more exclusive design than buying a mass produced item in a department store.

The Billion Dollar Startups

There are a number of social media companies who made it to a billion dollar valuation since they first started in 2004 and onwards. Names like Facebook, HomeAway, Box, Workday, Twitter, Spotify, Zynga, Dropbox, Evernote, Airbnb, Groupon, Square and Instagram started up and are now estimated to have a value between $0.74 Billion to $48 Billion. Amazingly, the latter figure is Facebook’s market value which has exceeded that of the other social media companies’ market value combined.

The number of employees at Groupon is almost 3 times as that of Facebook’s employee headcount yet it didn’t hinder Facebook from gaining more capital raised compared to all social media companies that started later. Twitter may have grown to be a popular social media site although the capital it raised is still more than a thousand million dollars less compared to what Facebook had achieved.

How Much Is A Pound Of Fat?

External image

Via: DegreeSearch.org

The gross looking ball of yuck up above is 1 lb. of fat. Everyone wants to get rid of their fat, but the truth is, you could never get rid of all of it. Nor would you want to! In fact, fat is so essential to our health that an average size 10, slim female carries approximately 100,000 calories of fat on her body.

So what’s in a pound of fat? 3,500 calories. It might surprise you what it would take to “burn” those calories through exercise. Let’s say you’re an average male, weighing about 180 lbs. If you run at 6mph (a 10 minute mile) it would take you over 4 hours to burn off a pound of fat! Cycling would take you just as long – over 4 hours. If you want to walk it off, it would take more than 3 times that long – 13 hours AND you’d end up walking about 39 miles. If you prefer yoga, your workout would have to be over 17 hours long!

What does it take to consume 3,500 calories? Not much, it turns out. According to My Fitness Pal’s food calculator, just 1 large french fry from McDonalds every day of the week will do it! At 500 calories per serving, those calories add up fast. Fresh fruits and vegetables don’t have nearly as many calories. To eat just 500 calories of carrots  (or strawberries if you’re more a fruit person) you’d have to eat nearly 10 cups of the stuff – that’s more than half a gallon!

You can lose weight by eating right, and reducing your calorie intake. Exercise and strength training can help burn calories and build muscle mass. Did you know muscle and fat both burn calories during the day? The catch is that 1 lb. of muscle burns 7-10 calories compared to the 2-3 calories burned by fat.

Implementing an Employee Referral Program in Your Organization [INFOGRAPHIC]

What’s the best way to recruit – and later retain – employees? Company career sites? Networking? Word of mouth? According to studies, it’s actually employee referrals. These employees are also shown to stick around for extended periods of times, as opposed to those who are found through different methods.

Since referrals are shown to produce better workers, it’s important to encourage your current employees and extended network to be involved in the recruitment process. This infographic, compiled by social employee referral management platform Zao, shows you how to get started with an employee referral program in order to attract and keep great workers.

Here are some key points to note:

  • Nearly 3 in 10 employers have caught a fake reference on a job application
  • Statistics show 1 out of every 5 referrals get hired
  • Methods such as gamification grow employee engagement in the referral process; 55% are interested in working for a company that uses gamification to increase productivity
  • Referrals are the highest quality hire
