3D Printing History

We live in an age that is witness to what many are calling the Third Industrial Revolution. 3D printing, more professionally called additive manufacturing, moves us away from the Henry Ford era mass production line, and will bring us to a new reality of customizable, one-off production.

Need a part for your washing machine? As it is now, you’d order from your repairman who gets it from a distributor, who got it shipped from China, where they mass-produced thousands of them at once, probably injection-molded from a very expensive mold. In the future, the beginning of which is already here now, you will simply 3D print the part right in your home, from a CAD file you downloaded. If you don’t have the right printer, just print it at your local fab (think Kinkos).

3D printers use a variety of very different types of additive manufacturing technologies, but they all share one core thing in common: they create a three dimensional object by building it layer by successive layer, until the entire object is complete. It’s much like printing in two dimensions on a sheet of paper, but with an added third dimension.

Hope you enjoy our latest infographic.

Get the Hottest Halloween Costumes of 2014

External image

Halloween will be upon us in little over a month, so now is the perfect time to start getting your costume and home decorations ready for the spookiest night of the year.

The origins of Halloween are thought to go back to the days of the Celts in Ireland who would leave out a treat for passing spirits and fairies. The treats were believed to keep the tricksy spirits happy and benevolent towards the mortals residing within the house. Historians have also argued Halloween dates back to the time of the Romans, when followers of the goddess Pomona would feast on fruit, nuts and seeds in her honour.

Whichever story you subscribe to, everyone the world over agrees that Halloween can be one of the most fun nights the whole family can enjoy. Hit the shops and look out for some fun decorations to get your house in the spirit. Decorate you front yard with some spook-tacular embellishments like headstones, witch effigies, skeletons and cobwebs to get the party started.

Paired with some glow-in-the-dark pavers leading to your front door, trick-or-treaters will not be able to resist knocking on your door for some delicious sweets. If you want to have some family fun on Halloween, the kids do not have to be the only ones who get to dress up.

Why not make a theme for Halloween and get the whole family involved? Dress your little boy in a Luke Skywalker outfit, your little girl as Princess Leia and Dad as Darth Vader. Complete the theme with the pet dog as Yoda and the whole family is ready for a Halloween adventure.

If you want a more traditional approach to costumes for Halloween, why not dress up as a ghost, vampire or witch? There are plenty of outfits available for you to purchase for your four legged friends from discount or craft stores. If you are feeling ecreative there is also plenty of time to make something for yourself and your pet to wear.

Whatever you decide to do this Halloween, remember to have fun and stay safe. If trick-or-treating is not on the agenda then a Halloween party with some good friends can be just as much fun.

Numbers Don’t Lie: 31 Stats Show that Australians are Right to be Driving on Left

There are many different factors that can cause vehicle accidents. From how roads are designed and the population to the number of people and drivers throughout the world the driving conditions are not exactly the same. However, you can see clear patterns in the data and the driving culture and environment based on just some statistics, such as:

  • Number of vehicles
  • Traffic accidents
  • Accidents per vehicle
  • Speed limit
  • Average crash speed
  • Kilometers of highway

The world is leaning towards driving on the right side, as 166 countries use the right side when driving while 74 countries stick to the left side.

Even though fewer countries drive on the left, major countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia drive on this side. I countries like the United States and Germany where people drive on the right there tends to be a greater number of vehicle accidents and fatal crashes. In fact, over the course of 100 million miles driven, there are 85 road fatalities per million inhabitants in Germany and 111 fatalities in the United States compared to 50 and 38 in Australia and the UK respectively.

In either left or right side counties, vehicle accidents are the most common (about 86% to 72%) followed by pedestrian (12% to 23%) and finally bicycle (2% to 12%). Countries that drive on the left side may have the fewest fatalities by vehicle (72.3% in the UK) and bike (2.7% in Australia and 5% in the UK), but most pedestrian fatalities occur compared to left side. In the United Kingdom, 22.7% and in Australia, 15% pedestrian fatalities occur compared to 14.8% in Germany and 12.2% in the United States.

Sometimes vehicle accidents can occur whether or not someone is driving on a certain side and despite the speed limit or type of vehicle crash. Accidents can occur because of different distractions as well and it’s a contributing factor for 22% of car crashes throughout the world.

One distraction is cell phone use and a reported statistic of 59% of Australians and 69% of Americans use cell phones while they are driving. However, besides texting, distracted accidents can occur because the driver was fatigued or they were too busy by looking at other crashes.

Now how’s that on a perspective of unsafe driving?

Skin Cancer in the UK

Today I have a worrying infographic from the skin care website called Beauty Flash all about skin cancer in the United Kingdom.

There are two main types of skin cancer called melanoma and non-melanoma and they are both major health concerns with non-melanoma being the most common type. Since the 1970s the number of people being diagnosed with melanoma in the UK has increased every year and now approximately 1 in 50 people are affected.

Older people are more likely are far more likely to get Melanoma than younger people - the older you get the more chance there is of you getting the disease. Both men and women can be affected but they tend to get it in different parts of the body, men most commonly get it on the trunk or torso whereas women most often get it on their legs.

This well designed infographic provides lots of information about skin cancer including the number of Malignant Melanoma incidents for each year, the number of Melanoma incidents in the various age brackets, the distribution of cases for men and women, survival rates and some advice about checking for skin cancer.

How to spot a FAKE ID

When verifying an ID, confirmation of authenticity often needs to be done quickly, which makes careful scrutiny of the driver’s license or ID card important. Every day retail clerks, bank tellers, police officers, HR managers, and other professionals have to authenticate an identifying document using the naked eye alone.

Over the last decade, U.S. states and Canadian provinces have made significant security upgrades to their drivers’ licenses and identification cards. While some of these features are only visible with special equipment (UV light source, magnification) other security features can be detected by the naked eye, by touch, or by simply tilting a card or holding it up to a light source. The infographic shows some of these easily verifiable features of drivers’ licenses and identification cards.

There is no universal standard for what security features are used on IDs and where they are located on the ID. The ID Checking Guide, U.S. & Canada Edition and the U.S. Identification Manual cover each IDs relevant security features (the Manual offers greater detail). The security features shown in the Infographic, plus an additional 10 security features visible only with special equipment, are included with additional text detail, in the “Security Features” section of the U.S. Identification Manual.
