Some Deaths Are Preventable

Life expectancy continues to increase with advancing healthcare, but there are still a prominent number of preventable deaths each year. The causes range from unhealthy eating to lack of physical activity, both of which contribute to the two main causes of preventable deaths in the United States: heart disease and diabetes.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, which is the developed country with the worst preventable death rate. It’s an alarming statistic considering the advanced nature of U.S. medical care. In the U.S., 32% of women under the age of 75 die from preventable deaths, while 23% of men under 75 suffer the same fate.

Despite advances in modern medicine, the U.S. is improving its preventable death rate at a slower rate than any other developed country. Inactivity and poor diet are the primary culprits, exacerbated by U.S. tendencies for easily accessible fast food and conveniences.

Dinner's Around The World

Dinner: it’s one of the world’s favorite meals of the day. According to research, 43 percent of families in the U.S. eat dinner together every evening. Americans eat out approximately 1.4 times per week. When Americans do leave the house for a professionally prepared meal, they tend to visit Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Pizza, and Thai restaurants most often. So how do our dinner eating habits compare to the rest of the world? You might be surprised to learn about some of the differences. In Nepal, for example, many people eat while sitting on the floor in a meditating position. In France, dinner can often be served as late as 10 P.M. In Spain, the meal served in the evening is often lighter than other meals eaten during the day. The following infographic outlines how dinner is prepared, served, and consumed in other parts of the world.

Tales From The Graveyard Shift

According to a recent study, one in five employees in the U.S. works during the evening, at night, or on rotating shifts. As scary as working the “graveyard shift” might seem to you, there are a number of reported advantages to working through the night. Night shift workers spend about 4.4 hours per day with their children, which is about 30 minutes per day more than day workers. More time during the day also means it can be easier to run errands, take care of personal matters, and spend more time in the sun. Working the night shift isn’t for everyone though. One study reports that 29% of male night shift workers are dissatisfied with their job situation, compared to 19% of males who work during the day. In addition, some studies have found that there are certain health risks associated with working at night for a prolonged period of time. In the following infographic, we’ll outline more advantages and disadvantages of working the graveyard shift, what industries you can find night shift work in, and additional research that relates to night shift work in the U.S.

History of Life Insurance

External image

History is not always as certain as we would like. The way in which the world worked centuries ago is known in outline, but we often only see highlights. So, for example, there have been versions of life insurance for more than two thousand years. It all began in Ancient Rome when military leaders faced the problem of high-cost funerals. Their families were expected to pay for major events. Their solution was to contribute into a fund that would pay for their funerals should they die unexpectedly when fighting wars.

This was translated into something more recognizably life insurance by John Graunt in 1662. He was a statistician and noticed predictable patterns in mortality. In the 1760’s, life insurance crossed the Atlantic and was offered in Charleston, South Carolina. This was not controversial and spread throughout America. However, when the Civil War broke out, the life insurance industry decided to pay out no matter which side the deceased supported. This openhanded approach became the basis of the Social Security programs we know today.

The next major event occurred in 1904 when the Central Life Insurance Company issued a policy covering a woman. The rest, as people say, is history. The basics were in place and all that followed just added details like the first claimants who died in an air crash, computerization, and so on. No doubt there will be something spectacular to add to the list tomorrow.

Why Should You Choose A Custom Design For Your Business

Design – the language, which we use to tell the world about our product, solution or proposition. The success of the design at the targeted audience of the project depends on how “literately” we will build the phrase. If we try to explain it using a foreign language, then we will build the phrase totally wrong way, violating grammar rules, sentence structure, as well as interchange the keywords position, unlikely to understand us. That is to say totally won’t understand, or may understand something totally different, something we didn’t mean at all. And even can take offense.

The Trouble With College Tuition

External image

When you first apply for college, learn about the professors. It is important to develop a good relationship with the instructors if you want to do well. Talk to them all, and get to know their expectations. It will help you throughout your entire college or university experience to have them on your side. Figure out where the college’s admissions office is and go to it before you pick out your college.

That way, you can determine whether there are scholarship options specific to the school. A lot of colleges have scholarships that are only for their students. By going to the admissions office and talking to the officer there, you’ll be able to know if you’re getting the best deal on your education. Whether you take college courses online or on campus, you will do well to prepare yourself for the experience. The modern college student can be any age from 18 to 80 and may have years of experience or could be fresh out of high school. Either way, soon-to-be and current students must take advantage of every available resource. For More information, visit our site Maufl.edu

Dining Out Trends in the UK

Dining out trends – An infographic by the team at The Restaurant Choice

How often do you dine out? Over 19,000,000 of us Brits are choosing to go out for a meal at least once a week! That figure might seem high but in actual fact we ‘dine out’ a lot more than we might think…

Whilst the term used to refer to getting gussied up and heading to a fancy restaurant, it might no longer be the case. Chain eateries have been doing incredibly well over the past few years, we’re talking names like Subway, Dominos and Nandos. Their clever pricing and ease of use appeal massively to the younger generation, who are tight on both time and cash. Considering the 18-34 year old demographic spend the most on eating out, this is pretty smart targeting.

It would seem however that cooking at home is still winning the battle, with every city apart from London spending more in the supermarket than they do in restaurants. Check out the infographic from The Restaurant Choice to see how your city spends.

Keeping Your Children Safe

Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death and disability for children in the United States.  In fact, more than 9,000 children die from accidental injury each year.  That is nearly 25 deaths a day.  In addition, over 2.9 million children are treated each day for fall injuries.

As scary as those statistics may be, the simple fact is that most of these accidents can be avoided.  Keeping your children safe is the most important job that you - as a parent - will ever have.  The key is understanding what the dangers are how to address them and minimize the risk that they pose.

For instance, car accidents are responsible for 25 percent of accidental deaths in children age 1-4.  However, a properly installed car seat can reduce the risk of death by 54 percent?

This infographic outlines the causes of accidental death and injury in children and what parents can do to keep them safe.

The Evolution of Employee Scheduling

There are a number of potential benefits associated with effective employee scheduling. Business owners who invest in some sort of employee scheduling system typically find that it can have a positive impact on productivity, employee motivation, and overall communication. Employee scheduling can also reduce staff costs, prevent overtime costs, and reduce absenteeism. According to research, inadequate scheduling accounts for employees wasting up to thirty-six percent of their time. The methods employers use to schedule their employees have evolved greatly over time. In the early days of employee scheduling, pen and paper was the only available way for employers to effectively manage their employees. During this time, employers had no other option but to painstakingly record schedules by hand. Over time however, great improvements have been made to employee scheduling. As more of the world has received access to the internet, more and more employers have started investing in and using convenient online and mobile systems to track the schedules of their employees. The following infographic outlines the evolution, benefits, and future of employee scheduling.

A Look at 10 Famous Lawyer Entrepreneurs

There have been many famous lawyers throughout history who, in addition to practicing law, also built and ran successful businesses or participated in ventures that didn’t always relate directly to law. Elizabeth Halloway Marston, for example, after receiving an LLB degree from Boston University, helped develop systolic blood pressure test. John Adams, in addition to many other primary responsibilities he had, acted as the main writer of the Massachusetts Constitution, which served as a model for the Constitution of the United States of America. This tradition of lawyers investing time and resources into other unrelated ventures has continued over time. Anatomy of One Day Shipping

As more and more people have become comfortable with using the internet as a primary shopping tool, ecommerce companies have worked hard to meet the constantly-evolving expectations of their customers. Today, consumers expect companies to provide an online shopping experience that is quick, customized, and convenient. This has led many companies to develop new, competitive strategies and services that aim to keep customers coming back for more. One such strategy that some companies now offer to their customers is known as 1-day shipping. Despite what many online shoppers think, 1-day shipping does not always necessarily mean they will receive their items the very next day after ordering. Instead, most companies that offer this service to customers are guaranteeing that the item purchased will be shipped one business day after it is available by the seller or retailer. In many cases, ecommerce companies will also list the estimated delivery date of an item separately from the guaranteed shipping date. In the case of Amazon Prime however, 1-day shipping does actually mean shoppers who have signed up for the service can expect to receive the item 24 hours after it has shipped. The following infographic illustrates the complex system Amazon has developed in order to be able to confidently offer this service (they have 80 fulfillment centers around the world). It also outlines how 1-day shipping models typically work, what Amazon has in store for the future of their shipping services (hint: same-day shipping), how other companies like eBay, Etsy, and Google are handling shipping demands. - See more at: http://itthing.com/anatomy-of-one-day-shipping#sthash.IN1Yib9o.dpuf

With online charity giving steadily rising, along with the ever-increasing popularity of social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube, and more, it’s not hard to find a number of recent examples of social enterprises that are effectively using social media to aid in their efforts. Heavy Lifting

Back injuries at work are often caused by heavy or unstable loads. They can also be caused by poor posture and improper lifting technique. Victims of heavy lifting accidents can also sustain hernias and strain injuries, as well as damage to the hands, arms and upper body.

The most common manual handling injury is to the back. Back injuries of this kind can be incredibly painful; where your job role involves heavy manual labour, it can damage your work prospects as well, often resulting in time off work and a loss of income. To prevent such injury, training should be provided, covering good lifting posture, the use of lifting equipment and guidance for managing heavy and awkward loads.

The best way to end distracted driving is to educate all drivers, young and old, about its danger.

In the 1940’s, thousands of American soldiers were overseas fighting in World War II. This gruesome war throughout Europe and the Pacific was draining on each man mentally and physically. One of the most popular ways to raise the morale of these brave soldiers was by handing out pin-up photos of beautiful women as a way to remind them of what they were fighting for back home.  These pictures were even painted on planes and other types of aircraft during the war to lift their spirits and were seen as a symbol of “good luck”. This wildly popular type of art was transformed when these pin-up models turned into a quintessential American icon that could be found everywhere in mid-20th century advertising, film, and many other outlets. This infographic gives an in-depth look into the careers of the most famous models and artists that embodied the “pin-up” style of art and made it into a phenomenon.
