Wind: Our New Source of Energy

Wind energy has grown by 29.7 (on average) every year over the past decade and if that exponential rate of growth continues, the US could derive 20% of it’s energy from wind by 2020. Currently, the systems that enable wind farms to implement predictive maintenance, rather than reactive maintenance are systematically underutilized, in the wind industry. eMaint is an ideal CMMS/EAM software for managing such maintenance activities and reducing maintenance costs.

Your Top Kitchen Tips

700 people were surveyed for their top kitchen tip and this is what came back! The aim of this survey was to see what other people deemed to be the tips that helped them most in the kitchen.

A lot of the tips that came back were pretty similar like clean the kitchen as you go along but there were a few weird and wonderful ones that I have never heard of before like clean stainless steel with baby oil? Who would ever have thought of that and what exactly were they doing when they tried it on the first place?

Who knows but the whole exercise was fun, I gained some new knowledge and I hope you do also!

The Goooogle Graveyard

Google has had a long history of creating many innovative products. Some of them become instant blockbusters while others get the axe over a period of time. When products go, we’ve seen a lot of backlash from the fans. Just recently, Google Reader got the axe, citing the lack of adoption growth as the main reason Google chose to sunset this popular Google product.

We’re expecting iGoogle and Google’s Keyword Tool to be next on the chopping block, but do not mourn just yet! The Google Keyword Tool will live on in part as the upcoming Keyword Planner, and iGoogle will become obsolete as Google Search steps towards parameterless search - that is search without typing into a search engine - based off of your habits.

Which of these retired Google projects do you miss the most?

The Curse of the Child Star: Celebrity Drug Addiction Infographic

It seems like every single day we come across a new headline highlighting the crazy shenanigans that Amanda Bynes or Lindsay Lohan find themselves involved in. What is wrong with them? They go from rehab to rehab, land in jail or in court, all the while tweeting crazy things and posting pictures of themselves almost naked. Now, they’re shaving off half their head or knocking over pedestrians with their Porshe - what on earth happened to them?

That black cloud of poor decision-making, drug and alcohol addiction, and crazy attention-getting behavior actually has a name: the curse of the child star. As it so happens, a huge number of youngsters that got thrust into the spotlight early on in life grow up to be a little bit insane.

But why? Some speculate that their poor habits formed out of boredom; as performers they experienced constant excitement, but as their careers began to slip, they sought that excitement in drugs and alcohol. Others believe that they crack because of all the pressure: instead of being treated like kids, they are treated as “little adults,” with all the accompanying responsibility that that entails.

Wherever it comes from, Lindsay Lohan, Macaulay Culkin, and Amanda Bynes are just three examples of the curse’s victims. They are not responsible for their actions; the actions are simply a result of their addictions. Check out this infographic to learn more about each actor’s downfall, and where they are now.

The Business Case for Data Archiving

In ERP systems there are great volumes of data that need to be tamed so that it can be sorted, arranged and presented. But in ERP systems, the data is more complicated and how to manage it can get dicey depending on the stakeholders involved and their requirements. For corporate databases, growth must be kept in check or it becomes unmanageable. And, for those using the data, it must be available instantly whenever and wherever it is needed.

So it begs the question: Why not archive it? After all, archiving saves money on a variety of levels! Isn’t that what the boss wants? Ahh. You have to build a Business Case for Data Archiving?

The Biggest, Most Disastrous Medical Malpractice Lawsuits

Source: The Biggest, Most Disastrous Medical Malpractice Lawsuits Over the Years

Did you know that many states have a cap for medical malpractice? Medical malpractice, what’s that? Medical malpractice refers to professional negligence by a health care professional or provider in which treatment provided was substandard, and caused harm, injury or death to a patient.  While some states have a cap for this (Maryland being the highest at $785,000) others rule it is unconstitutional to have such caps. One of the most disastrous medical malpractice payouts was an incident involving ketchup packets. The incident involved a 36 year old man who was on life support from a traumatic brain injury after he passed away the autopsy reported unopened ketchup packets, plastic bags and paper towels were found in his stomach and bowls. His family was paid $11 million dollars. Another extremely disastrous medical malpractice incident occurred in 2006 when a doctor used a screw driver instead of titanium rods for a patients back, the patient died two years later and the family was awarded $5.6 million dollars. For more information on medical malpractice lawsuits check out the attached infographic.

Evolution of the Hen & Stag Party

External image

Dating from as far back as the Spartans and Henry VIII through to the party-focused events we have today, Stag and hen parties (or bachelor and bachelorette parties) have changed dramatically over the years. Celebrating of the ‘last night of freedom’ is a time-honoured tradition but in recent years we have seen a shift from one-night parties to overseas weekend breaks filled with all manner of activities and celebrations. Even festivals and glamping are proving to be popular activities for stag and hen parties today.

The events also differ vastly between genders – with hens favouring activities like spas and stags preferring to go paintballing or go karting. Hen parties themselves weren’t even an option until the 1960’s when the feminist movement helped to spur on equality for all kinds of events

Here’s a fun look at how these much-loved celebrations started and the ways in which they’ve evolved throughout history.

The Dishonest Tradition of Fudging the Facts on a Resume

External image

Source: The Dishonest Tradition of Fudging the Facts on a Resume

“

We all fudge the facts sometimes; from how big the fish we

caught was to how old we are. Sometimes we do it to impress somebody, sometimes

we do it to make ourselves look better, whatever the reason sometimes our fact

fudging has consequences. One incident that our fact fudging could have serious

consequences is on a resume.  Fudging the

facts on a resume is one of the most common ways people stretch the truth. However,

before you stretch the truth, fudge some facts, or down right lie on the next

resume you submit keep in mind that many employers are starting to spend more

time looking, researching, and reviewing resumes. For more information on

fudging the facts on a resume check out the attached infographic.

Try a Home Energy Audit to Save Money on Energy

Audits are usually only for companies, but a home energy audit is actually something to welcome because it can save you hundreds of pounds each year. This is especially good because the cost of energy in the UK has risen over the past decade from £522 to over £1,000, and is set to rise a further 20% over the next 5 years too.

Making some energy saving changes in the home can be a boon for lowering costs. A range of alterations to older homes and the replacement of older appliances can help to cut the number of energy units used for electricity, gas and water which can save money whatever the price per unit happens to be at the time.

Here are a few energy saving ideas which can reduce the amount of energy used in the home considerably over the course of a year.

Loft Insulation

Heat generated in the home often rises into the attic or loft and then is lost through the walls or roofing. By installing a good quality insulation which can cost just £300 to get done, but then creates saving upwards of £180 annually thereafter.

Cavity Wall Insulation

Next up is wall insulation. Big advances with insulation materials have made the latest types of insulated much improved from ones used only 20 years ago. Up to 25% of heat can be lost through poorly insulated walls.

Curtains

Thick curtains can help to keep dampness from entering the home and also to trap heat before it reaches the windows and walls.

Double Glazed Windows

Double glazing provides a buffer to the cold outside and better retain the heat generated inside the home too.

Door Draft Excluders

These little strips around the door or door frame can prevent drafts from moving around the interior.

Energy-saving Light Bulbs

The newer energy-saving light bulbs are easy to swap out from the old CFCs and save up to 90% on electricity used.

Take A Shower Instead

Baths use a lot of of water every time. Heat is used to warm the water and the water used is considerable too. Up to 80% of both energy and water can be saved when switching to showers.

Heating Blanket

Try a blanket laid over the water heater or water boiler to keep the heat inside the unit.

Energy-Saving Kitchen Appliances

The latest A+ rated cookers, fridges and washing machines use as much as 50% less energy versus lower-rated C or non-rated appliances.

Drop the Temperature

Consider dropping the temperature on the thermostat to 22 degrees. This will hardly be noticed with the other energy efficient changes going into the home. Could save as much as £100 annually too.

Wean Yourself Off Standby

Give your electrical devices a rest and turn them off when they are not being used. As much as 18% of electrical consumption could be removed by not using standby any longer.

Interim Managers- Infographic

Whether in business or football, all interim managers need certain skills to succeed. The use of interim managers is on the increase in both areas, so we’ve created an infographic to look at this growing trend.

The infographic covers three areas: firstly, we analysed ten interims in the Premier League era to see how they compared to their full time predecessors; then we took an in depth look at Chelsea, perhaps the club who use interim managers more than any other, before finally asking the ultimate question: “Who is the King of Interim?” Source:(http://iilovetechnology.blogspot.com/).

The revealing statistics clearly show that, at Chelsea, interim managers enjoy more success than at any other club. Perhaps this is because the use of interims is embedded in the club’s culture from season-to-season?

The Anatomy of an Audit

“Will you face an IRS audit this year? The answer is…maybe.

The fear of facing an audit is common, even if you know that you’ve done nothing wrong. And the number of taxpayers who must face an audit is up slightly since 2009. But even with that increase, only slightly more than one percent of all returns are actually audited.

Individuals who earn more than one million dollars and corporations with over ten million dollars in assets are most likely to be audited. Of course, you’re not totally off the hook if that profile doesn’t describe you, but the odds of staying audit-free are in your favor.

Learn even more fascinating facts about IRS audits. Check out the infographic below.”

How the Channel Tunnel was Built

The Channel Tunnel is one of the largest engineering ventures ever in the UK. Taking over five years to complete, with roughly 13,000 workers from England and France working together to complete the vision. It was such a task to take on that the tunnel is now one of the seven wonders of the modern world. However, the grand scale of the project is largely forgotten, from the machines used, to how deep they ventured.

Today, as hundreds of passengers take the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle under the Channel, it can be easy to forget this astonishing and unique man-made structure. This Eurotunnel Le Shuttle infographic runs through how the tunnel was created with tunnel boring machines, the size of the project, how many family pets have been under the channel and the volume of traffic, which travels through on a daily basis.

Relapse: The Revolving Door

One of the hardest challenges for a recovering alcoholic or drug addict is the temptation to use again and risk of relapse. It’s so difficult that nearly half of all recovering addicts will relapse within one year, and 61% of those will relapse more than once, over and over. This is why relapse is often referred to as a revolving door: a neverending cycle of addiction, treatment, recovery, and relapse. But there is hope: relapse is not a failure; it is simply a setback. You can always pick yourself up and try again.

Although the 5-year relapse rates - never released together before in this format - can be a little scary, the overall relapse rate is comparable to other chronic illnesses such as asthma, type 1 diabetes, and hypertension. The infographic below lays out some of the common triggers and causes of relapse. Use these tools to resist your relapse.

Popping Pills: A Prescription Drug Abuse Epidemic

It has long been evident that the United States of America is a country overtaken by medication. Our pill popping tendencies and medical shortcuts have led to a number of problems - over-medicated children and an antibiotic crisis - but they’ve also created a generation eager to use these small, colorful, loosely controlled pills to get their next fix. In 2010, enough painkillers were prescribed to medicate the entire working population every four hours for an entire month. With 5% of the world’s population, the United States consumes three-quarters of its drug supply.

In 2010, there were 7 million prescription medication abusers - which is bad enough - but now, just in the past month there have been 6.2 million users. Their abuse falls into three categories: painkillers, tranquilizers, and stimulants; over half of these users get their fix for free, from a friend or relative who usually got them from their doctor. Prescription medications are so easy to get ahold of that teenagers even cite this as their #1 reason for using - they’ve got a whole smorgasbord of drugs in their parents’ medicine cabinets.
