Get the Hottest Halloween Costumes of 2014

External image

Halloween will be upon us in little over a month, so now is the perfect time to start getting your costume and home decorations ready for the spookiest night of the year.

The origins of Halloween are thought to go back to the days of the Celts in Ireland who would leave out a treat for passing spirits and fairies. The treats were believed to keep the tricksy spirits happy and benevolent towards the mortals residing within the house. Historians have also argued Halloween dates back to the time of the Romans, when followers of the goddess Pomona would feast on fruit, nuts and seeds in her honour.

Whichever story you subscribe to, everyone the world over agrees that Halloween can be one of the most fun nights the whole family can enjoy. Hit the shops and look out for some fun decorations to get your house in the spirit. Decorate you front yard with some spook-tacular embellishments like headstones, witch effigies, skeletons and cobwebs to get the party started.

Paired with some glow-in-the-dark pavers leading to your front door, trick-or-treaters will not be able to resist knocking on your door for some delicious sweets. If you want to have some family fun on Halloween, the kids do not have to be the only ones who get to dress up.

Why not make a theme for Halloween and get the whole family involved? Dress your little boy in a Luke Skywalker outfit, your little girl as Princess Leia and Dad as Darth Vader. Complete the theme with the pet dog as Yoda and the whole family is ready for a Halloween adventure.

If you want a more traditional approach to costumes for Halloween, why not dress up as a ghost, vampire or witch? There are plenty of outfits available for you to purchase for your four legged friends from discount or craft stores. If you are feeling ecreative there is also plenty of time to make something for yourself and your pet to wear.

Whatever you decide to do this Halloween, remember to have fun and stay safe. If trick-or-treating is not on the agenda then a Halloween party with some good friends can be just as much fun.

Numbers Don’t Lie: 31 Stats Show that Australians are Right to be Driving on Left

There are many different factors that can cause vehicle accidents. From how roads are designed and the population to the number of people and drivers throughout the world the driving conditions are not exactly the same. However, you can see clear patterns in the data and the driving culture and environment based on just some statistics, such as:

  • Number of vehicles
  • Traffic accidents
  • Accidents per vehicle
  • Speed limit
  • Average crash speed
  • Kilometers of highway

The world is leaning towards driving on the right side, as 166 countries use the right side when driving while 74 countries stick to the left side.

Even though fewer countries drive on the left, major countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia drive on this side. I countries like the United States and Germany where people drive on the right there tends to be a greater number of vehicle accidents and fatal crashes. In fact, over the course of 100 million miles driven, there are 85 road fatalities per million inhabitants in Germany and 111 fatalities in the United States compared to 50 and 38 in Australia and the UK respectively.

In either left or right side counties, vehicle accidents are the most common (about 86% to 72%) followed by pedestrian (12% to 23%) and finally bicycle (2% to 12%). Countries that drive on the left side may have the fewest fatalities by vehicle (72.3% in the UK) and bike (2.7% in Australia and 5% in the UK), but most pedestrian fatalities occur compared to left side. In the United Kingdom, 22.7% and in Australia, 15% pedestrian fatalities occur compared to 14.8% in Germany and 12.2% in the United States.

Sometimes vehicle accidents can occur whether or not someone is driving on a certain side and despite the speed limit or type of vehicle crash. Accidents can occur because of different distractions as well and it’s a contributing factor for 22% of car crashes throughout the world.

One distraction is cell phone use and a reported statistic of 59% of Australians and 69% of Americans use cell phones while they are driving. However, besides texting, distracted accidents can occur because the driver was fatigued or they were too busy by looking at other crashes.

Now how’s that on a perspective of unsafe driving?

The Worlds Coolest Sheds

Today I have an infographic from the new United Kingdom garden buildings buyers guide called What Shed featuring some of the coolest sheds that you will ever see.

To find all these wonderful sheds the people at What Shed looked at hundreds of entries on the fantastic shed of the year competition website called Reader Sheds and selected fifteen of the very best designs they could find for this infographic.

Some of my personal favourites are Munchkin House, The Queen Emma, The Priory and The Teapot. Please let me know which ones you like the most by leaving a comment here or by posting on Facebook, Twitter or Google+.

The infographic provides a nice picture of each shed as well as the owners names, key features and wherever possible the location of each one. I am pretty sure most of these sheds are based in Britain but the location of some of them is unclear.

Micromanagement is one of the leading causes of employee unhappiness at work. Why? We are neurologically wired to perceive and respond to micromanagement as a threat. That’s right — there’s really no helping that feeling of irritation and foreboding when a manager is breathing down your neck. Celebrity Engagement Rings - When They Get Ripped Off Just Like We Do

What’s interesting. though, is that these feeble fees pale in comparison to the amount of money dropped on an engagement ring by our celebrity counterparts.

Skin Cancer in the UK

Today I have a worrying infographic from the skin care website called Beauty Flash all about skin cancer in the United Kingdom.

There are two main types of skin cancer called melanoma and non-melanoma and they are both major health concerns with non-melanoma being the most common type. Since the 1970s the number of people being diagnosed with melanoma in the UK has increased every year and now approximately 1 in 50 people are affected.

Older people are more likely are far more likely to get Melanoma than younger people - the older you get the more chance there is of you getting the disease. Both men and women can be affected but they tend to get it in different parts of the body, men most commonly get it on the trunk or torso whereas women most often get it on their legs.

This well designed infographic provides lots of information about skin cancer including the number of Malignant Melanoma incidents for each year, the number of Melanoma incidents in the various age brackets, the distribution of cases for men and women, survival rates and some advice about checking for skin cancer.

Healthy Body and Refreshed Mind with Natural Oils

External image
Natural oils from plants, flowers, and vegetables offer amazing therapeutic properties for healing body and mind.

 Avocado Oil

Avocado Oil is a natural skin moisturizer and highly effective in skin rejuvenation. It gets absorbed faster than most other oils and hence keeps skin soft and smooth for a longer time.

 Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil is mainly used for first aid, as it provides excellent healing properties. It’s highly effective in the treatment of minor wounds and cuts. Eucalyptus oil eases skin irritation and is also used for its anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties.

 Lavender Oil

Lavender Oil is an effective skin and scalp disinfector. It is used to treat skin conditions like wrinkles, acne, and other blemishes. It also accelerates the skin’s healing process.

 Tangerine Oil

Tangerine oil can redefine the structure of your skin and make it smother and softer. It is also a good antiseptic and effective in skin rejuvenation too.

Using natural oils on your skin can offer some incredible benefits. It is important to figure out which oil is right for your skin type. Knowing how to use it is equally significant.

How to spot a FAKE ID

When verifying an ID, confirmation of authenticity often needs to be done quickly, which makes careful scrutiny of the driver’s license or ID card important. Every day retail clerks, bank tellers, police officers, HR managers, and other professionals have to authenticate an identifying document using the naked eye alone.

Over the last decade, U.S. states and Canadian provinces have made significant security upgrades to their drivers’ licenses and identification cards. While some of these features are only visible with special equipment (UV light source, magnification) other security features can be detected by the naked eye, by touch, or by simply tilting a card or holding it up to a light source. The infographic shows some of these easily verifiable features of drivers’ licenses and identification cards.

There is no universal standard for what security features are used on IDs and where they are located on the ID. The ID Checking Guide, U.S. & Canada Edition and the U.S. Identification Manual cover each IDs relevant security features (the Manual offers greater detail). The security features shown in the Infographic, plus an additional 10 security features visible only with special equipment, are included with additional text detail, in the “Security Features” section of the U.S. Identification Manual.

Content Marketing Infographic

External image

In March 2014 I presented at SMX Sydney on the  topic of a Practical Content Marketing Framework.

I created this infographic  to explain in simple terms the core concepts of the Content Marketing Framework.

Why Use a Content Marketing Framework?

The reason I created the framework was to help me and others understand  how all of these various activities that people call “Content Marketing” come together to help a business achieve it’s ultimate business goals.

Also I couldn’t stand seeing generic blog posts being pitched as a link building strategy and now I can point at this infographic and say “See, content needs to do this to add value”

The framework recognises that content marketing is not a replacement for link building and that different activities can have different goals which means they have different measures of success and time frames within which to achieve that success.

I’ve got to give a big shout out to some great minds,  without whom, pieces of this puzzle would not have come together for me.

  • Jon Cooper from @pointblankseo for his concept of Fail proof Content.  It was great to meet Jon in Sydney.
  • Jason Acidre @kaiserthesage for his concept of Evergreen Content.
  • To Marcus Sheridan @thesaleslion from The Sales Lion whose ebook Inbound Marketing and Content Marketing Made Easy is easily one of the best resources on this topic you will find.
  • To Gideon Shalwick whose  valuable time given over coffee  and in his videos helped clarify my thinking around trust and influence.

If you have any questions please leave them in the comments below.

Designing the Perfect Office

In a recent study published by the Journal of American Medical Association that surveyed roughly 29,000 computer users and found that 52.7% were working with at least one form of daily musculoskeletal discomfort which lead to a loss of productivity. Increasing productivity in the office is what every organization strives to achieve. Organizations have noticed that there’s a link between worker discomfort, lost productive time and cost. Addressing these discomfort levels with the right ergonomic furniture is an important business strategy.

Millions of Americans are suffering from lower back pain and having ergonomic furniture in the office can help fight this problem. For instance, ‘hands in lap posture’ is the ideal position for using a keyboard and mouse. An ergonomic office chair is also important so that you’re able to adjust the chair to your liking. Monitor positioning is another important factor and should be adjusted so that the top of your monitor is no higher than eye level.

Everyday millions of people around the world spend time and money shopping online, 370 million hours and $1.5 trillion respectively, more often than not they’re leaving money on the table. In fact, 80% population who shop online overpay 19% on average per transaction. This is shocking since when asked what their top motivational factor was for buying online, 72% said price.

We all try to do our due diligence and compare prices before we finally decide to checkout. However, this process can be time consuming with an average of 10.4 pieces of information being viewed before making a purchase.

The process to find the best prices shouldn’t be this hard, thats why sites like Coupons.com, RetailMeNot, Groupon, and Livingsocial exist. However, you always end up jumping from one to the other to make sure you have the best deal possible, that’s where apps like BuyHappy come in. When you have the browser app installed, you just shop like you normally do, BuyHappy searches for the best prices, and lets you know if you have the best price or where you can get it for less. It’s that simple.

Now the science to saving online hasn’t been perfected, but whatever your method, we hope you buy happy!
