The inspiration behind this exercise was the growing adoption of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) in enterprise business environments. Virtual server environments tend to have a very high level of redundancy, so deduplication can lead to large reductions in the amount of storage capacity required. Analyst George Crump of StorageSwitzerland.com wrote on December 3rd, 2012, “Over the next year there will be a sharp increase in the number of storage systems that offer deduplication thanks to more intelligent implementation methods that don’t impact performance nor put data at risk.” Between some ROI analysis provided by Mr. Crump, some information from the McKinsey Quarterly, and additional data points provided by Tegile, we were able to generate the following infographic analysis about why deduplication is becoming a must have in enterprise storage environments.
