Heavy Lifting

Back injuries at work are often caused by heavy or unstable loads. They can also be caused by poor posture and improper lifting technique. Victims of heavy lifting accidents can also sustain hernias and strain injuries, as well as damage to the hands, arms and upper body.

The most common manual handling injury is to the back. Back injuries of this kind can be incredibly painful; where your job role involves heavy manual labour, it can damage your work prospects as well, often resulting in time off work and a loss of income. To prevent such injury, training should be provided, covering good lifting posture, the use of lifting equipment and guidance for managing heavy and awkward loads.

Hearing Loss in the UK

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) occurs when someone is continuously exposed to loud noise, whether when working or listening to loud music. Noise exposure is the main cause of permanent hearing damage in the workplace, the World Health Organization says. It is also known as Industrial Deafness or Occupational Deafness.

Those working in a noisy environment such as manufacturing, construction, airfields or music venues should make sure that all the measures and protection are in place to reduce such a risk. When the noise exposures reach 80 dB, the employer is liable to take action. Employees who have developed hearing loss whilst working in a noisy environment without any protection are entitled to make a claim for hearing loss compensation.
